Chiropractor
Chiropractic care is one of the few complementary therapies fully integrated into KVG. You can access a chiropractor directly without a GP referral, and treatment is covered like any other specialist.
Chiropractic status in Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the few countries where chiropractic is a fully regulated, KVG-covered medical profession. Swiss chiropractors (Chiropraktoren) hold a federal doctorate (Dr. med. chiro.) and are licensed to diagnose and treat independently. Chiropractic treatment is covered by KVG the same way as GP or specialist visits — no referral required, no prescription required, and no distinction between insurance models.
Accessing a chiropractor
Book directly. No GP referral is needed. Bring your insurance card. The chiropractor bills KVG directly. Chiropractors are listed on chirosuisse.ch and doctor.ch.
What conditions do chiropractors treat?
- Neck pain and cervicogenic headaches
- Low back pain (acute and chronic)
- Thoracic and rib cage pain
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Radiating arm or leg pain from spinal origin
- Sports injuries affecting the spine and joints
At the first appointment, the chiropractor takes a full history and performs a physical examination. They may order imaging (X-rays, MRI) if clinically indicated — covered by KVG.
KVG coverage and costs
Billed using the Tarmed system. Subject to franchise and Selbstbehalt. No session limit per year. A standard consultation costs CHF 100–200. Once your franchise is met, KVG pays the full amount.
When to see a chiropractor vs a physiotherapist
Chiropractors focus on diagnosis and manual adjustments for joint mechanics. Physiotherapists focus on rehabilitation and exercise-based therapy. For acute spinal pain, a chiropractor can be the first and only provider needed. For rehabilitation after surgery, physiotherapy is typically more appropriate. Many patients see both at different stages. There is no restriction on seeing both simultaneously.
