About HowToSwissMedical

HowToSwissMedical is an independent, non-commercial guide to the Swiss healthcare system. It was created to help newcomers, expats, and international residents understand how health insurance, medical providers, billing, and data privacy work in Switzerland.

Academic context: This project was developed as part of the BFH module EBDS (Berner Fachhochschule). It serves as a practical application of web development and data engineering skills in a real-world context.

Project goal

The Swiss healthcare system is complex, multilingual, and often confusing for people who didn't grow up with it. Official resources are scattered across cantonal websites, insurer portals, and government publications — often only in German or French. HowToSwissMedical brings this information together in one place, in plain language, in seven languages. The goal is to make the system understandable for anyone, regardless of background or language.

Technology

Built with Next.js, React, Prisma, and PostgreSQL. Insurance premium data sourced from official BAG/OFSP datasets. Hosted via Docker. All source code is available on GitHub.
